A man in his 30s has been found dead outside his home in freezing temperatures under unexplained circumstances, prompting the police force to refer itself to the watchdog

A man in his thirties was found dead on a residential street in freezing temperatures, with police treating the death as unexplained.

The grim discovery was made by a passerby outside a house on Hazel Avenue in Guildford, Surrey. Surrey Police have since referred themselves to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) after having contact with the man prior to his death.

Officers were called to the scene at around 7:15am on Friday morning. While they believe the man has been identified, formal identification is still underway, and his next of kin have been informed.

Forensic teams attended the scene to investigate, and the street—home to a community centre, nursery, and playpark—was temporarily cordoned off before reopening Friday afternoon.

Police said the death is being treated as unexplained, but the circumstances are not believed to be suspicious. The self-referral to the IOPC follows mandatory procedure whenever the force has prior contact with a person who dies.
